For the LGBTQI community in England, the HIV virus in the early 1980s was not just a medical threat: under Margaret Thatcher, gay men became an openly targeted group.

Until the mid-1990s, HIV was synonymous with the exclusion of those affected. The 'Don't Die of Ignorance' campaign changed the discussion in the UK, but it also inadvertently fueled prejudices.

Today, just one pill a day is enough to make HIV undetectable. The downside of this medical breakthrough is that the number of transmissions is rising rapidly again.
