England 1964: Having just been crowned "Miss Blackpool," Barbara Parker leaves her family and the provinces to enter show business in London. But first she ends up in a department store.

Barbara, who now calls herself Sophie Straw, screws up her first appearance. But she gets the chance to audition for the comedy show "Dining In".

Barbara's father is in hospital in Blackpool with a stroke. With a heavy heart, she nevertheless goes through with the recording of her first sitcom episode "Jim and Barbara".

The love affair between Barbara and Clive Richardson arouses the interest of the public.

After Barbara makes a gaffe on the show, Ted Sargent kicks her out. It is announced to the press that she has mumps - and it gets worse.
